DESCRIPTION:We are sorry to announce that due to the current outbreak of coronavirus\, the Museum is now closed and this talk has been postponed. We hope to arrange a new date for the talk with the speaker and will update the website in due course. \nPlease accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused. \n\nJoin us for another Friday Morning Talk and discover the amazing true story of Royal Canadian Air Force’s 411 Squadron. These fearless pilots flew their Spitfires from several airfields in the South East including RAF Biggin Hill and Tangmere. \nOur speaker\, Nick Oram\, will share with us the missions flown in the winter of 1943-44\, leading up to D-Day and beyond\, and will tell the personal stories of several of the Roaring Boys pilots\, sharing archive footage of them discussing their experiences. Attendees will be able to see original artefacts and photos donated by the pilots’ families. \nNick has woven this fascinating tale into a new book\, ‘Spitfire Elizabeth and the Roaring Boys’. SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Friday Morning Talks: ‘On a ‘Wing’ and a Prayer: The British Imperial Airship Scheme 1924-30’
\n\nJoin us for another fascinating Friday Morning Talk\, by Rudi Newman. \nAn iconic form of inter-war aviation\, the airship dream famously met its end with the 1937 Hindenburg Disaster. However\, less known is a revolutionary British programme based in Bedfordshire that intended to connect the farthest reaches of the Empire with a fleet of luxurious craft. Building two airships\, R100 and R101\, the triumphs and tribulations of their development are presented\, ultimately ending in one of the worst disasters to befall the British aeronautical industry. \nBy Rudi Newman

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Friday Morning Talks: 'The Wreck Hunter: Battle of Britain & the Blitz'
DESCRIPTION:We are sorry to announce that due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic\, this talk has been postponed. We hope to arrange a new date for the talk with the speaker and will update the website in due course. \nPlease accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused. \n\nJoin us for a Friday Morning Talk by Melody Foreman\, and discover the world of Battle of Britain archaeology! \nAs a boy living near RAF Fighter Command’s famous Biggin Hill airfield in 1940 Terry Parsons’ had a death-defying encounter with a hail of bullets from a low flying Dornier 17. It was this haunting experience that led him as a young man in the 1960s to begin a lifetime’s search for forgotten Spitfires\, Hurricanes\, Defiants\, Beaufighters\, Me109s\, Dorniers and Heinkels which had fallen from the skies. \nNow regarded as a pioneer in the field of aviation archaeology Terry has dug more than 900 RAF and Luftwaffe aircraft from the countryside and back gardens of southern England. \nThis illustrated talk about his inspiring and dedicated work in honour of ‘The Few’ and ‘The Many’ is presented by Melody Foreman MCIJ – author of ‘The Wreck Hunter’ – Terry’s compelling and heart-felt story of discovery and revelation. \nThe audience will learn how artefacts recovered from crash sites are major historical and significant reminders of an airborne conflict easily on a scale of importance as Trafalgar or Waterloo. For example we find out how a bent machine gun from the wreck of Oblt Lt Ulrich Steinhilper’s Me109\, a piece of shattered perspex from Pilot Officer George Corbett’s Spitfire\, or even a shoe once belonging to Polish fighter ace Marian Pisarek found in a crumpled Hurricane cockpit\, all offer us striking evidence of the personal and most significant stories of the aircrews of 1940. \nLoaded with social history\, compelling stories\, and full of rare and exclusive interviews with the families of the pilots\, the talk will also include tales of the heartening times when several members of ‘The Few’ joined Terry on a dig to help find the Spitfire or Hurricane they had perilously baled out of during the heat of the Battle. Among them were the awesome and much missed Squadron Leader Tony Pickering and Group Captain Tom Gleave CBE – archivist of the Battle of Britain Memorial and founding member of The Guinea Pig Club. \nBy Melody Foreman

SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: ‘ACHTUNG JÄGER! The Successes & Failures of the German Fighter Force in the Battle of Britain’
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another Friday Morning Talk when speaker Chris Goss will explore the Luftwaffe’s perspective of the Battle of Britain. \nDespite being buoyed by the successes in Poland\, France and the Low Countries\, for the German fighter pilots\, the Battle of Britain would be a different matter. Nevertheless\, by 31 October 1940\, 204 of them had five air combat victories or more and 36 had been or would be awarded the coveted Knights Cross. However\, 25 of them would be killed and 21 captured during the Battle of Britain with another 90 being killed and 8 captured in the years that followed. \nThe Battle of Britain is usually seen through the eyes of the victors; this talk aims to explore the perspective of the losers. \nBy Chris Goss \nIncluded in Museum admission or Annual Membership. Advance booking required. \nReserve Your Place
