RAF Bentley Priory Headquarters Figher Command Filter Room – Colourised by Doug Banks
Bentley Priory Museum is excited to launch a new temporary exhibition to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between 10th July and 31st October 1940.
‘Battle of Britain Illuminated’ features a unique collection of iconic photographs of the Battle, brought to life in colour by artists Richard James Molloy and Doug Banks.
RAF Bentley Priory played a pivotal role during the Battle of Britain as Headquarters Fighter Command. This special 80th anniversary exhibition brings the Museum’s narrative of The One – Sir Hugh Dowding, The Few – Battle of Britain Aircrew and the Many – those who worked tirelessly on the ground, to new life: shining the spotlight on key moments and individuals.
Richard James Molloy – ColourByRJM is a colourisation artist that specialises in the digital colouring of historical military images. Using research based on known colours and historic colour charts Richard is able to construct accurate colour representations of period images. He is a regular contributor to Iron Cross magazine and has just seen the release of The Battle of Britain in Colour, a book covering all aspects of the Battle of Britain presented in over 170 colourised images.
Amateur historian and digital colourist Doug Banks says, “My interest in WW2 aircraft began as my first job was working in my brother-in-law’s model aircraft shop. I live very near to Shoreham airport and until the air disaster in 2015, the constant sound of Merlin engines could be heard as the aircraft flew over my house during the annual air show. I feel proud to be involved in the Battle of Britain event at Bentley Priory Museum to celebrate the 80th anniversary this summer.”
