Friday Morning Talks: ‘Operation Black Buck: The Vulcan in the Falklands’
September 7, 2018 at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
In 1982, after Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands, Britain responded by sending a Taskforce of more than 100 ships and some 25,000 troops to retake the islands 8,000 miles away.
There was only one runway on the islands which could be used by aircraft to attack and possibly sink our fleet, so action had to be taken to prevent the Argentinians from using this runway. The only bomber which could possibly reach this runway was the Vulcan.
Join us for another Friday morning talk, when Martin Withers DFC tells the story of the first bombing mission, named ‘Black Buck’, which lasted nearly 16 hours, was re-fuelled in the air 7 times and started the offensive action to liberate the Falkland Islands.
