Friday Morning Talk – 611 Squadron – With Aldon Ferguson
September 9, 2022 at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Join us for our Friday morning talk by Aldon Ferguson about 611 (West Lancashire) Squadron RAuxAF
611 Sqn was formed in the expansion period prior to WWII, and saw action as a Spitfire and Mustang fighter squadron throughout the war. The main claims to fame include being one of the first Auxiliary units to be equipped with Spitfires; shooting down up to 1,000 Luftwaffe aircraft as a Biggin Hill based unit; the first squadron over the D-Day beaches in June 1944 and the first to meet Russian aircraft over Berlin in 1945.
An action-packed war career, followed by an active post war period flying Spitfires and then Meteor jets.
Today the Squadron is located at RAF Woodvale, near Liverpool, and still plays a leading role in the RAF reserves.
This talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership.
