Friday Morning Talks: Operation Frugal – With Aldon Ferguson

February 24, 2023 at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join us for our Friday morning talk, where Aldon Ferguson will be telling the story of the little known, but highly important ‘Operation Frugal’.

Operation Frugal was the support of Prime Minister Churchill and his advisors when he met with Stalin in Moscow in October 1944.  It involved the delivery and collection of the diplomatic bags to and from Moscow by the Mosquitoes of 544 Squadron based at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire.  Flying over enemy territory these flights were fraught with danger from both the Luftwaffe and the Soviet Air Force when strange aircraft appeared in Soviet skies.  This is the story of how these flights took place and the problems they faced from mistrust and a total lack of co-operation from the Soviet authorities and how the photo reconnaissance trained pilots succeeded.

This talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership.
