Online Talk: The RAF’s Role in the Occupation of Iceland in WWII
February 25, 2022 at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Join us on Zoom for a new Online Talk and discover the fascinating history of the RAF and ‘The Blessed War’ in Iceland in WWII!
Learn why the British occupied Iceland in WWII; the military expansion of the island; the terrible flying conditions and how we built new airfields, ports, roads, hospitals and more. Iceland greatly benefitted from the occupation and called it ‘The Blessed War!’
Hear how the RAF mounted shipping patrols, defensive fighter patrols, anti-U-boat sweeps, convoy protection, ice patrols and their joint activities with the American USAAF.
Understand the island’s strategic role in so many ways including trans-Atlantic ferrying of aircraft, protection of arctic convoys and shooting down of Nazi bombers and reconnaissance aircraft. Also hear about the personal life of the RAF personnel; their involvement with local life and their tragedies.
